A third baseman with the American League Cleveland Indians from 1947-56, he was baseball’s first ever unanimous selection as Most Valuable Player in 1953.
For 5 consecutive seasons (1950-54), Rosen knocked in 100 or more runs each year. Al led the American League in RBI’s in 1952 (105), 1953 (145), and was home run champion twice in 1950 (37), 1953 (43). He was the first rookie to win the HR title. In 1953, Al barely missed the coveted Triple Crown when his batting average fell .0011 short of winning the batting crown.
Al led the A.L. in total bases in 1952 and 1953 as well as slugging average in ‘53. Four consecutive times he was elected an All-Star (1952-55), hitting two homers and 5 RBI’s in the ‘54 game.
In 1972, AL Rosen and George Steinbrenner made a bid to buy the Cleveland Indians, but the bid was rejected. After the NY Yankees were purchased by Steinbrenner, Al Rosen served as their president in 1978 and 1979. The Yanks won the series in 1978.
